Your starting point

Building a system or working with the one you have?

Planning new solar

Start with electricity use, the available roof or land and the utility serving the address. Roof condition and upcoming electrical changes can affect the design.

  • Rooftop or ground-mount placement
  • Grid-connected or off-grid supply
  • Current and future electrical loads

Changing an existing system

Start with the installed equipment and records. Adding a battery, replacing a roof or investigating lower production can each have different compatibility and coordination requirements.

  • Equipment makes and model numbers
  • Monitoring and service history
  • The specific change or symptom

What happens after sunset

Battery storage starts with a list of loads.

A battery’s usable energy and its power output answer different questions. One affects how much energy can be delivered; the other affects what equipment can run at the same time. Backup also requires compatible equipment that can safely operate when the grid is down.

Daily bill management is a separate goal. A battery may be scheduled around a time-of-use plan while keeping a reserve for outages. The useful arrangement depends on the actual tariff, the property’s consumption and the equipment installed.

  • Name the circuits you want backed up
  • Distinguish backup from daily energy shifting
  • Review compatibility before adding equipment

Looking after existing solar

Different symptoms call for different work.

The roof is being replaced

Solar removal and reinstallation should be coordinated with the roofing schedule. Equipment records, storage, attachment details and recommissioning belong in the plan.

Production or monitoring has changed

A lost app connection does not necessarily mean the system stopped generating. Record when the change occurred and any visible status message before arranging solar support.

You want to expand or add storage

Equipment age, inverter capabilities and the utility arrangement can affect the options. Existing and new equipment should be reviewed as one system.

For the first conversation

Bring the records that change the answer.

  • Utility and usage

The utility serving the address, the current rate plan and recent usage history.

  • Property details

Roof age and planned roof work, or the proposed ground-mount area and cable route.

  • Existing equipment

Inverter, module and battery models, installation records and access to your own monitoring information.

  • Your priority

Lower grid use, outage support, an off-grid supply or a specific existing-system problem.

Before you book

Choosing solar, storage or system support.

Here are a few details to help you plan the work. Call us if your property or equipment needs a closer look.

Will ordinary grid-connected solar power the house during an outage?

Usually not. Grid-connected solar normally shuts down when utility power is lost. Backup requires an appropriate system design and compatible equipment that can isolate from the grid and supply the intended loads.

Can a battery be added to existing solar?

Often there are options, but compatibility must be checked. The existing inverter, electrical layout, utility arrangement and backup goals influence the design and the work required.

Do you use the same peak hours for every utility?

No. SMUD, PG&E and other utility plans have their own schedules and terms, which can change. Time-of-use planning should use the rate plan shown on the property’s current account.

How much could solar or battery storage save me?

Savings depend on energy use, system design, the tariff, financing costs and future changes. A forecast should explain those assumptions. The same equipment can produce different financial results at different properties.

Should I speak with you before replacing the roof?

Yes, if solar equipment is on the roof. Early coordination helps define removal, equipment handling, the roofer’s work, reinstallation and the checks needed to return the system to operation.
